Why people love it

  • Much nicer than LaTeX · 8

I've recently made a dozen vastly different projects with Typst, ALL of which would have created dependency hell, syntax noise, and hours of extra pointless work in Latex.

    Mar 2026 · comment

I took the time off uni to migrate back to typst because I refuse to submit to the psychological warfare that is latex ever again.

    Sep 2026 · comment

a good balance between the readability & simplicity of Markdown with the flexibility & composability of LaTeX

    Apr 2026 · comment
  • Automated PDF generation from data · 7

I use mostly typst for pdf generating today i have written different frontends and connectors to transform everything into typ files and templates

    Oct 2026 · comment

The template itself takes json as input and then uses the typst template language to render. It works very very well.

    Jun 2026 · comment

it turns pdf generation into a programming language, hence you can automatically generate invoices with little hassle

    Jun 2026 · comment
  • Scripting and extensibility · 4

It's really nice having a decently powerful scripting component, it makes for some fun literate-style programming.

    Jun 2026 · comment

Typst is so far one of the most enjoyable ways of programmatically generating layouted stuff I ever used.

    Jun 2026 · comment

This gives me a lot more flexibility, and typst is nicely extensible with custom typesafe functions.

  • Handles books, slides, documents · 4

Typst is however a good Markdown++ in that once a collection of markdown files grows to book size, it's easy enough to port.

    Jun 2026 · comment

I've produced a staggering variety of documents with Typst. Books, booklets, slides, cards, documentation, everything.

    Apr 2026 · comment

Markdown + a typst template gets you far. I have exactly that for my docs and it works very well.

What people warn about

  • HTML output unstable or missing · 3

Definitely the best option for complex stuff except that its HTML output support is still experimental.

    Jul 2026 · comment

The HTML target being unstable, meaning I can't really build a half-decent ePub target from it

    Nov 2025 · comment

From typst one cannot really create HTML, which makes typst unsuitable for online publishing.

    Apr 2026 · comment
  • Smaller ecosystem than LaTeX · 3

for most usages it's a good alternative even if it doesn't have all the ecosystem of 50 years of tex/latex

    Aug 2026 · comment

At a quick glance Typst seems to be very limited compared to LaTeX, especially for more unusual languages.

    Nov 2025 · comment

its parsing/compiling strategy allows less introspection and extensibility than TeX does

    Jun 2026 · comment
  • Not ideal as storage format · 3

while it is a good intermediate format if you want to produce PDFs, it is not a good and permanent storage format

    Apr 2026 · comment

Typst source files are not human readable in the same way and would be terrible at it

    Jun 2026 · comment

I am not a fan of the syntax. I use it as an intermediate format on the way to PDF.
