What people warn about

The steam deck is way too under-powered to be "the best console". Best handheld, maybe, if you really value portability.

Jun 2026 · commentThe Steam Deck was a tad too bulky for my liking all along, but the 800p screen leaves a lot to be desired
Jul 2026 · commentToo bulky to carry · 3
The stupid Switch, and especially the even larger Steam Deck, I never actually have with me when I want it.
Feb 2026 · commentThe Steam Deck was a tad too bulky for my liking all along, but the 800p screen leaves a lot to be desired
Jul 2026 · commentThe Steam Deck is quite a lot bigger, though I often take both on holiday as they fill different needs.
Jun 2026 · commentMode switching freezes device · 2
Flipping from gaming mode to desktop mode or vice versa had a solid 50-50 shot of inducing a fail state requiring a hard reset.

SteamDeck as a handheld is great plus or minus a few nits baked onto the power / battery life choices Valve made.

What hackers pick instead
- ASUS ROG AllyRecommended for strong performance on handheld hardware and for running SteamOS or Bazzite well. Critics point to Windows overhead and update hassles.7recommend
- Lenovo Legion GoPowerful handheld with a nice screen and specs ahead of Steam Deck, but it is heavier with weaker battery life and runs plain Windows.7recommend
- Lenovo Legion Go SRecommended for its sharper 120 Hz screen and stable SteamOS gaming, with longer battery life. Critics say it costs more than the original with nearly the same chipset.5recommend
