Paged Out

What hackers pick instead

• Byte magazineRecommended for wide, deep computing coverage that taught readers programming; back issues are free online. Critics say later issues were thick with ads.49recommend
• The New YorkerRecommended for long-form journalism, investigative reporting and fiction, reasonably priced with little advertising. Common caveat: many pieces are long, drawn out and pretentious.26recommend
• Dr. Dobb's JournalRecommended as a nostalgic programming magazine whose articles still capture the era's tech zeitgeist and remain useful.14recommend
• Delayed Gratification magazineRecommended for well-designed print journalism with clear infographics; critics say it is too focused on the UK and Commonwealth.11recommend
• Tmp.0ut Volume 5People recommend it for its well-made interviews and striking, non-corporate design. The most common caveat is that it works poorly on mobile.9recommend
