# Nintendo Switch Online 6 Hacker News commenters recommended Nintendo Switch Online and 7 criticized it, November 2025 to November 2026. It was recommended in 3 of 13 months. **Verdict:** Recommended for easy online netplay and replaying retro games with distant friends. Main caveat: a paid subscription where retro games can't be owned permanently, and automatic renewal is a complaint. ## Why people recommend it - Online play with distant friends (2 comments): "insanely easy-to-use netplay for retrogames between consoles that were formerly locked to a single console" ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47529543)) "it's been pretty amazing to re-play games with childhood friends who are now dispersed across the planet" ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47530477)) ## What people warn about - Paid access to classic games (2 comments): "instead of paying a subscription for some mediocre emulators that you can't even own permanently" ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47528354)) "the $10/month subscription they sell to the selection of 80s and 90s games" ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48614274)) - Auto-renewal and data opt-ins hidden (2 comments): "It also does this right when you first sign up for automatic renewal except the deadline is [1 year from now]." ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48864444)) "They bury a bunch of social media / data sharing opt-ins about halfway through the game" ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45987745)) ## Alternatives hackers recommend - [Xbox Game Pass](https://hackerapproved.com/p/xbox-game-pass.md): 28 recommend - [Apple Arcade](https://hackerapproved.com/p/apple-arcade.md): 22 recommend ## Where to get it - [See price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Nintendo+Switch+Online+membership&tag=hackerapprove-20) (affiliate link) ## Cite as Hacker Approved, "Nintendo Switch Online", https://hackerapproved.com/p/nintendo-switch-online/ (counts from 1,795,640 Hacker News comments, November 2025 to November 2026).
