Why people love it
Deeply customizable and configurable · 7
they have built a great foundation with Plasma and Plasma dark mode with Breeze is such a great balance of flexibility and fairly consistent look and feel
Mar 2026 · commentIt's the ultimate power user desktop system, in my opinion it even dwarfs MacOS in terms of how you can customize it and how it looks.
Jun 2026 · commentKDE makes it pretty easy to create rules that apply automatically to any new window that meets whatever arbitrary criteria you set.
Jun 2026 · commentPolished, works well out of the box · 6
Nowadays there is nothing I would recommend more to the average user who just wants something normal that works. It just works.
Jun 2026 · commentPlasma 6 is really polished and simple. I think anyone familiar with windows would be able to grab and run with it immediately.
Jan 2026 · commentKDE out of the box is basically that. It's more customizable. It's (IMO) less clunky and less burdened by legacy components.
Jun 2026 · commentStable and much less buggy now · 6
KDE used to be extremely buggy 5-6 years ago and since testing it on my Steam Deck, from my experience, this is no longer the case.
Mar 2026 · commentI've been running Plasma as a daily driver (and without a fallback OS) for around 8 years now without this kind of trouble.
Jan 2026 · commentKDE Plasma(The default DE) and XFCE which I only used for a short while gave me the most stable and consistent environment
Nov 2025 · commentExcellent multi-monitor fractional scaling · 2
You should probably try KDE instead; I've been doing scaling for a couple years now, since I moved away from Windows, and it's excellent.
Dec 2025 · commentMultiple monitors with different resolutions & thus different fractional scaling ratios just works, from the Plasma settings GUI.

What people warn about
Crashes and broken features · 4
A fantastic feature, but unfortunately currently broken (as in over- rather than under-zealous) for prevention levels other than 'Low'
Jul 2026 · commentPlasma requires a restart a few times per day for me, as the panels disappear and one monitor's (of two) desktop goes black
Jan 2026 · commentAlt DP mode doesn't operate under kde wayland plasma due to inherent incompatability between implementation design and kwin
Jul 2026 · commentDefaults clash, require heavy tinkering · 4
the default keybindings for desktop operations feel like they were designed by people who don't navigate their desktop with a keyboard
Aug 2026 · commentYou have to spend hours customizing KDE or CFCE to get them to function even halfway near what an average user would expect.
Feb 2026 · commenttoo much of it clashes with my preferences, even after spending quite a lot of time tinkering with its many config options
Apr 2026 · commentVisual and functional inconsistency · 2
no Linux distribution — whether with KDE, GNOME, or Hyprland — comes close to Windows in terms of stability and cohesion
May 2026 · commentThere is definitely a visual and functional inconsistency between the two, even if they use the same theme pretty well.
Apr 2026 · commentExcessive memory use · 2
but the new crop of developers didn't notice much difference on their high-end systems with SSDs, so they ripped it out.
Jul 2026 · comment4GB still seems excessive, by at least one and probably several orders of magnitude, for what vanilla KDE actually does

What hackers pick instead
- GNOMEA consistent, modern Linux desktop with a fast keyboard-driven workflow and sensible defaults, though many say it removes features and needs extensions that break between releases.340recommend
- XfceA lightweight, stable Linux desktop with a classic layout that stays out of your way and is highly customizable, though mixed high-DPI monitor setups and Wayland support lag.183recommend
- COSMIC desktopPeople recommend it as a smooth, polished Linux desktop with tiling built in and good defaults out of the box. The common caveat is that it still has rough edges and is not fully finished.75recommend
- Cinnamon desktop environmentA polished, Windows-like Linux desktop that is simple and light on resources. Critics say it is less customizable than KDE or GNOME.57recommend
- MATE DesktopLong-running fork of GNOME 2 that people pick for its familiar layout, stability and low fuss. Development has slowed, so newer features like fractional scaling are missing.29recommend
