Seems to be between a little and a lot faster in almost all of the tests.

What people warn about
Young code and development hiatus · 2
I wouldn’t call it mature. Not to say it’s buggy, but most of its code is very fresh.
Jan 2026 · commenthad a hiatus with zero commits of over 1.5 years until recently iirc

The chart showing jxl-rs taking 1209ms to decode a 5456x3632 image in a single thread is a little damning

What hackers pick instead
- JpegliGoogle's JPEG encoder that improves plain JPEG quality without a new format, matching WebP's quality and size while keeping better compatibility.13recommend
- libjxlReference JPEG XL implementation that compresses images well, especially for archiving; critics cite recurring security vulnerabilities and slow high-effort encoding.9recommend

Measuring on a single core is deeply misleading

I'm mildly optimistic for a retry with jxl-rs. However, seeing much of the same contributors from libjxl on jxl-rs does make me quite cautious.
