# Apple Nano Texture display

23 Hacker News commenters recommended Apple Nano Texture display and 15 criticized it, November 2025 to November 2026. It was recommended in 3 of 13 months.

**Verdict:** People like it for glare-free use in bright places and a paper-like feel, but many find it lowers contrast and gives a grainy, dusty look.

## Why people recommend it

- Glare-free in bright or uncontrolled light (2 comments): "such a huge QOL improvement if you take your laptop to various places where you can't control the lighting" ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46684978)) "Glare is just never a problem, no matter where I am." ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46686087))
- Paper-like feel, especially with a pen (2 comments): "It's perfect for the iPad, it adds just a little friction to the pen and makes it much more paper like in feel too." ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46694544)) "It has a paper-like quality to it that I've not seen with any other laptop display." ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46686411))
- Better than glossy or standard matte (3 comments): "It's a special coating which works differently to standard matte screens wich makes it way superior." ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46688844)) "The nano texture screen coating is clearly better for my purposes vs a glossy screen." ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46690314)) "apple's textured screen is superior in terms of sharpness and color/vibrancy" ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46695093))

## What people warn about

- Lower contrast and washed-out blacks (5 comments): "The nano-texture adds a filter-like appearance, resulting in a lower contrast ratio than the glossy panel." ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46684953)) "The blacks are getting washed out from light in the room that is diffused by the matte finish." ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46687998)) "So both matte displays and nano-texture glass scatter light, and they both reduce contrast." ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46686526))
- Grainy or dusty appearance (2 comments): "To me it looked "grainy" (along with something like diffusion glow and rainbowing I think), and I can't give up the high contrast that I've gotten used to." ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46727667)) "I couldn’t get used to the “dusty” appearance of the nano texture" ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46684245))
- Reduces apparent sharpness and fidelity (2 comments): "the nano texture screen decreases the apparent pixel density, so much that my eyes don't perceive them as retina screens" ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46684599)) "100% of the time it just reduces the picture fidelity somehow" ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45780728))
- Premium price (2 comments): "Nano-texture Apple displays largely address that, but then they're much more expensive." ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46666895)) "Now they can sell you "nano texture" at a premium after getting you hooked on functionally terrible displays" ([source](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46684360))
